A brief confrontation with an upsetting outcome, this short piece of fiction introduces the off-beat tone of Esther Harrison.
Esther is journeying to Scotland to visit her estranged mother. The reason for this trip is that Esther's father, who she has been caring for for some years, is going to pass away soon. He has asked Esther to reach out to her mother with one final correspondence from him - which isn't his only hope in orchestrating this trip. ‘You have arrived at your destination,’ says the automated
assistant that lives inside my handset and when I look up, I see she’s right. I’m outside a building with clouded windows. When someone walks in ahead of me a flood of noise tumbles through the doorway. I think about leaving. I think about leaving for so long that someone from inside the building actually comes out. ‘Are you lost, pet?’ Yes. I’m so, so lost. |
